In Sanatan Dharma, Tuladan has been said to be a charity that brings good results. In this, a person has to donate grains equal to his weight. Tuladan i.e. donation of grains equal to one’s own weight should be done only to a worthy or needy person. It has been said in the scriptures that charity should never be done to the injured, it does not give good results. All wishes are fulfilled by Tuladan, a person enjoys happiness during his lifetime and attains salvation at the end.
How the tradition of Tuladan started
At the behest of Lord Vishnu, Brahma ji got Tuladan done to decide the importance of pilgrimages. Along with this, a story of Lord Krishna is prevalent from Tuladan. According to this, once Satyabhama donated to Narad Muni to establish her monopoly on Shri Krishna. Satyabhama realized her mistake when Narad Muni started taking Krishna. But Satyabhama had donated to Krishna, in such a situation, Satyabhama asked Narad Muni for a solution to get Krishna again. Then Narad Muni asked Satyabhama to donate Tula to Lord Krishna. Then Shri Krishna was placed in the scales on one side and gold-coins, ornaments, grains etc. on the other side. Despite this, the side of Krishna did not move. Then Rukmani asked Satyabhama to keep a basil leaf in the donation box. As soon as Satyabhama placed the Tulsi leaf in the pan containing gold-coins, ornaments and grains, it became equal to the pan of Shri Krishna. It is believed that, at that time, Shri Krishna called Tuladan equal to Mahadan, by which one gets freedom from all sins and gets virtuous fruit.
